  1. 1918- . Japanese right-wing politician,
  2. leader of the dominant Liberal Democratic
  3. Party (LDP) and prime minister 1972-74. In
  4. 1976 he was charged with corruption and
  5. resigned from the LDP but remained a powerful
  6. faction leader. In the Diet from 1947, Tanaka
  7. was minister of finance 1962-65 and of
  8. international trade and industry 1971-72,
  9. before becoming LDP leader. In 1974 he had to
  10. resign the premiership because of allegations
  11. of corruption and 1976 he was arrested for
  12. accepting bribes from the Lockheed
  13. Corporation while premier. He was found
  14. guilty in 1983, but remained in the Diet as
  15. an independent deputy pending appeal. He was
  16. also implicated in the 1988-89 Recruit
  17. scandal of insider trading.
